Importance of Being Earnest

Event Type(s): Arts / Theatre / Music, Teen Activities
Organization: Western Reserve Academy
Description: On April 20, Western Reserve Academy will take audiences back to Victorian England in a performance of Oscar Wilde's hilarious play, The Importance of Being Earnest.

Set in late 19th century London and Hertfordshire England, the play tells the story of the affluent gentleman, Jack Worthing, who will do just about anything to avoid the responsibilities of his prominent social standing — even invent a fictitious brother, Earnest. When Cecily Cardew and Gwendolen Fairfax both fall in love with Earnest, hilarity ensues as Jack and his confidant, Algernon Montcrieff, do everything they can to conceal the truth about Earnest.

Though first performed in 1895, according to Director and Fine & Performing Arts Departments faculty member Donalee Ong, the play's humor is as fresh as ever.

"I think audiences will really appreciate the play's wit and quick humor," Ong said. "It's both light and funny – perfect for spring time and appropriate for all ages."

Reserve's student-actors echo these sentiments and have enjoyed embodying Wilde's witty characters.

"What I enjoy most about the play is the light-hearted nature of the dialogue and the snarky attitude all of the characters have," Noah Frato-Sweeney '20 said. "Much of the humor is directed toward the audience, and we often break the fourth wall, which only adds to the wit!"

Joey Houska '20, who plays Cecily Cardew appreciates the play's fast-moving but clever dialogue.

"The majority of the production is filled with quick, witty banter and a lot of the jokes are quite subtle," Houska said. "The repartee makes for a really interesting stage dynamic and it's a lot of fun to participate in."

Many of the costumes and accessories were crafted and sewn by Ong herself in order for her actors to wear period costumes, and have helped students imagine themselves in the 19th century.

"I love getting to delve into a different era," Kali Chapas '18 said. "Discovering how behaviors were different and then translating them to the stage is so much fun!"
